This traditional German Christmas bread originated in Dresden in the 1400s. Legend says that the stollen, in its typical shape with the white layer of icing sugar, symbolized the swaddled Christ Child.
Naturally leavened with our sourdough starter, the Voyageurs version of the Christmas Stollen includes whole spelt flour as well as dried raisins, apricots, glazed cherries, and almonds. A log of marzipan runs through the center of the bread.
This bread can last for a few weeks well wrapped in the refrigerator and makes a beautiful, traditional Christmas gift.
